About & History of Knox County

Knox County is located in the Northeast part of the state and was named after was named after General Henry Knox, the Secretary of War.  The county was founded on 14 Feb 1845 and the county seat is Edina.

During the Civil War, there was an engagement in Newark, Missouri known as the Newark Capture.
Confederate soldiers led by Colonel Joseph C. Porter and Union Troops, from the 2nd and 11th Missouri Militia Cavalry and the engagement led to Union soldiers surrendering

Early Business Timelines

Early businesses and trade included the Grinding Mills, one of the earliest, which proved essential for the agricultural industry, was established by James Fresh on South Fabius River in 1834.

In the County Seat of Knoxville, 5 retail stores were established

Manufacturing was essential to Knox County, the settlement community included 3 wagon factories, a blacksmith shop and a distillery.  Essential for the expanding settlement and agricultural needs.
